The Courts

Regina’s newest pickleball courts are soon to be at Sherwood Forest.

Surrounded by panoramic views of the Qu’Appelle Valley, the proposed location of the new pickle-ball courts is just south-west of the club house.

The Sherwood Forest Pickleball Club is spearheading the fundraising efforts and we hope to have the construction completed soon.

What is pickleball? Pickleball is a sport that is comprised of elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. It can be played indoors on a hard surface, or outdoors on an asphalt or concrete surface and uses a smooth-faced paddle and a hard plastic ball that has several holes in it like a wiffle ball. For indoor play the hole sizes are smaller than for playing outdoors.

Much like the above sports, the ball is hit back and forth across a net until one side can no longer return the ball or a fault occurs. It can be played as singles or more commonly as doubles.

The court is divided into halves by a net which is 34 inches high and centered across the width of the court. Each half of the court is then further divided into three sections. The first section is an area adjacent to the net that is 7 feet from the net and is called the non-volley zone or kitchen. The remainder of this side is then further divided into 2 equal sized sections called the service areas.

As with any sport, pickleball has its own set of rules and scoring that can seem quite daunting in the beginning but are easily learned.

It is a fun, exhilarating game for all ages.
