The Courts

The new pickleball courts are now open at Sherwood Forest.

Surrounded by panoramic views of the Qu’Appelle Valley, the location of the new pickleball courts is just south-west of the club house.

What is pickleball? Pickleball is a sport that is comprised of elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. It can be played indoors on a hard surface, or outdoors on an asphalt or concrete surface using a smooth-faced paddle and a hard plastic ball that has several holes in it like a wiffle ball. There are different balls for playing indoors versus outdoors, with indoor balls having fewer and larger holes than outdoor balls.

Much like the above-mentioned sports, the ball is hit back and forth across a net until one side can no longer return the ball or a fault occurs. It can be played as singles or more commonly as doubles.

The court is divided into halves by a net which is 34 inches high in the centre, and 36 inches at the outside edges, and is centered across the width of the court. Each half of the court is then further divided into three sections. The first section is an area adjacent to the net that is 7 feet out from the net and covers the width of the court. This area is called the non-volley zone or kitchen. The remainder of this side is then further divided into 2 equal sized sections called the service areas.

Like other sports, pickleball has its own set of rules and scoring that can seem quite daunting in the beginning but are quickly and easily learned.

It is a fun, exhilarating game for all ages. So come out and play.
